MECHLAB Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 27, 2026
This policy explains how Schreyer Data & Automation LLC ("we", "us") handles information when you play MECHLAB or the MECHLAB Demo (together, "the game") on Meta Quest. We built the game to collect as little as possible. We do not sell your information, we do not show ads, and the game contains no analytics or tracking SDKs.
The short version
- Single-player modes send nothing to us. Your garage builds, story progress, ladder record and settings stay on your headset.
- Online play (full game only) uses Unity Gaming Services (Unity Technologies) to connect you to another player. It uses a random, anonymous player ID and an auto-generated pilot name. It does not use your real name, email or Meta profile.
- LAN play connects two headsets directly over your local network using their local IP addresses.
- Meta checks that your account owns the game when it starts; the game only receives a yes or no. Meta's own privacy policy covers your Meta account and the Meta Horizon Store.
- There is no voice chat, no text chat and no free-text input that other players can see.
1. Information stored only on your headset
The game saves the following on your device so it can remember your progress:
- garage builds (the parts on your mech), rival-ladder progress and win/loss record;
- story-mode checkpoints;
- settings, such as music and master volume;
- your online pilot name, which is generated from a fixed word list (for example "TURBO SPROCKET"), your last chosen online arena, and the last LAN IP address you typed.
This data is not sent to us. Uninstalling the game or clearing its app data deletes it. If you turn on Meta's cloud backup for apps, Meta may back up this data under Meta's terms and privacy policy.
2. Meta platform entitlement check
When the game starts, it uses the Meta Platform SDK to ask the Meta Horizon platform whether your Meta account is entitled to use it (anti-piracy). Meta performs this check with your Meta user ID on Meta's side; the game receives only a yes or no. The Demo also uses the Platform SDK to open the full game's store page when you choose VIEW MECHLAB ON THE STORE. The game does not request your Meta user ID, username, profile, friends list or any other account data, and we do not receive or store them. Meta's handling of your account data is covered by the Meta Privacy Policy and Meta's Quest legal terms.
3. Online play (full game only; internet rooms and quick match)
The MECHLAB Demo has no online play. It doesn't include Unity Gaming Services and doesn't request internet access for gameplay, so sections 3 and 4 apply only to the full game.
Internet play uses Unity Gaming Services (UGS) from Unity Technologies:
- Authentication (anonymous sign-in). The first time you go online, UGS creates a random, anonymous player ID for this installation and stores a session token on your headset. The ID is not linked to your name, email, Meta account or any other identifier we hold.
- Lobby. When you host or join a room or quick match, UGS stores a short-lived lobby record containing: your anonymous player ID, your generated pilot name, the room's 6-digit code, the game's protocol version, the match mode and a Relay join code. The host's game keeps the lobby alive while the room is open, and the lobby is deleted when the host leaves (or expires shortly after).
- Relay. Match traffic is routed through Unity's Relay servers so the two headsets never see each other's IP address. Like any internet service, the relay servers necessarily process your IP address to deliver the traffic.
Unity states that Lobby and Relay process your IP address and your Unity Authentication player ID and keep them for about 30 days. Unity acts as our service provider for these services. See Unity's Relay, Lobby and Authentication privacy overviews.
What the other player receives during an online match: your generated pilot name, its colour, a taunt picked from a fixed list, your game version, your mech build, your controller inputs as game actions, and match events such as hits and round results. They do not receive your Meta username, real name, voice or IP address (when using Relay).
Unity processes this data to provide these services. Unity may also collect technical and diagnostic information about how its services and SDKs are operating. See the Unity Privacy Policy and Unity Gaming Services privacy information.
We can see aggregate service usage in the Unity dashboard (for example, the number of active lobbies or relay traffic) and, if needed, individual anonymous player IDs and lobby records for troubleshooting and abuse prevention.
4. LAN play (full game only; same Wi-Fi network)
LAN HOST shows the host headset's local IP address on screen so a friend in the same room can type it into LAN JOIN. The two headsets then connect directly over your local network (UDP port 7788). Each headset can see the other's local IP address. This traffic stays on your local network and is not sent to us or to Unity. The last address you typed is saved on your headset for convenience.
5. Unity engine data
MECHLAB is made with the Unity engine. Games built with Unity may send Unity Technologies limited, non-identifying technical information about the device (such as hardware model, operating system and graphics capabilities) to help Unity improve its engine. This is covered by Unity's Player Data Privacy information.
6. What we do not do
- No analytics, telemetry or crash-reporting SDKs of our own.
- No advertising, ad identifiers or cross-app tracking.
- No in-app purchases in the Demo. If the full game ever sells optional content, purchases will go through the Meta Horizon Store and Meta will process the payment; we will update this policy first.
- No voice chat, text chat or user-written names.
- No access to your camera passthrough images, microphone, contacts or precise location.
- No sale or sharing of personal information for money or for targeted advertising.
7. Why we use this information (legal bases)
Where laws such as the GDPR apply, we rely on:
- performance of our agreement with you: to run the game, save your progress and connect online matches you ask for;
- legitimate interests: to keep online play working, secure and fair, for example by preventing abuse of rooms.
8. How long it is kept
- Data on your headset stays until you delete it or uninstall the game.
- Lobby records last only while a room is open.
- Unity keeps the IP address and player ID that Lobby and Relay process for about 30 days. Anonymous UGS player records are kept by Unity under its retention rules; you can reset yours by clearing the game's app data, which creates a new anonymous ID next time you go online.
9. Your rights and choices
- You can play every offline mode without going online.
- Depending on where you live (for example the EEA, UK or California), you may have rights to access, correct, delete or object to the processing of personal information. Because we do not collect your name, email or Meta profile, we usually cannot link online records to you. Contact us at collin.schreyer@gmail.com and we will help as far as we reasonably can, including asking Unity to delete an anonymous player record you identify.
- You can also complain to your local data-protection authority.
10. Age: 13 and older
MECHLAB and the MECHLAB Demo are intended for players 13 and older, and are listed on the Meta Horizon Store for teens and adults. They are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The game has no chat and no free-text sharing between players. If you believe a child under 13 has used online play or provided personal information, contact collin.schreyer@gmail.com and we will help delete it.
11. Security
Online traffic through Unity Relay is encrypted (DTLS). No system is perfectly secure, but we keep the data we handle to a minimum.
12. International transfers
Unity and Meta may process data in the United States and other countries. They are responsible for appropriate safeguards for the data they process.
13. Changes
If we change how the game handles data, we will update this page and the effective date, and where appropriate tell you in the game or on the store page.
14. This website
The MECHLAB website is a static site hosted on GitHub Pages. It uses no cookies, analytics or trackers, and it loads its fonts from the site itself. GitHub may log visitors' IP addresses for security and operations under the GitHub Privacy Statement.
